Unpredictable destinations for solo female travellers 2019

Best destinations for solo female travellers 2019

This is a unique blog I put together by collaborating with 7 other travel bloggers! I put it out there, that I was looking to publish this blog, and I wanted it to be mainly locations that most of us probably wouldn’t pick for our first choice of places to visit!

I didn’t change any of the context either, each destinations discerption is written by the blogger listed. Enjoy!

Malta

One of my favorite destinations that I visited was the small Mediterranean country of Malta. Malta is an incredibly beautiful island that is entirely safe for a solo female traveler. The primary reason I chose Malta was to: 1) visit a country I had never been to and 2) celebrate my birthday somewhere warm, preferably with a beach. I stayed at a hostel nearby Paceville – which is an area known for the nightlife. One of the best things about Malta is that everything was walkable. Walking along the promenade is one of the best ways to explore the different cities with the most gorgeous views – I spent an entire day walking from St. Julians to Valetta with friends I had made at the hostel, stopping at little cafes along the way. On my birthday, I took a boat to Comino Island with new friends – spent the day snorkeling, cliff jumping and sipping cocktails from a pineapple at the Blue Lagoon with some of the clearest water I’ve ever seen. Of course the day wasn’t complete without indulging in traditional Maltese cuisine which was sort of a mix between Italian and Spanish food. My favorite dishes were the rabbit stew and pastizzi (ricotta filled pastry).

Scotland

If you haven’t added Scotland to your must-see list, girl, you are missing out. It’s an incredible country - think wild, lush landscapes, winding country roads, mysterious big cities, and - ahem - those lovely Scottish accents on the burliest of men. It’s a country of absolute magic, I swear to you. Around every corner of every street, or every bend in the road, I found something awaiting me and I couldn’t get enough of the place.

One day I’d be discovering the ancient mysteries and histories of old Edinburgh, the very next I was steaming along in the Harry Potter train and climbing upon old castle ruins. I frolicked along fairy pools with sheep bah-ing me along my way and dipped my toes into the famed Loch Ness (no Nessie sightings, but it didn’t stop a little bubble of nervousness in my belly at the thought!). I pulled over for photos of ‘coos’ and twirled in a sudden downpour. Basically every travel fantasy you have could be realized in Scotland.

Bonus? It’s incredibly safe for solo female travellers and equally fun (IMO) whether travelling solo, with friends, or as a couple. There’s honestly something here for everyone, and you’ll find yourself traversing captivating cities, climbing gorgeous mountains, visiting coral white beaches, and passing a night in a beautiful castle - maybe even all in the same day!

Some of my fondest travel memories come from my time spent in Scotland and I’m already planning my return. You’ll find loads of details and my full 10 day itinerary on my blog www.postcardsandpolkadots.com - I guarantee that when you go, you’ll have the time of your life! P.S. Send pics, mmkay?

Maui

Snorkelling with turtles, relaxing on white, red and black sand beaches, or hiking to scared pools and waterfalls: Maui has the best of both worlds. It’s relaxing, but adventurous. Perfect for the all-around up-for-anything female traveller.

Solo female travel destinations 2019-5.jpg

Maui is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of place. If you love the idea of traveling alone and mapping out your own itinerary – look no further. You can easily rent a car and do (and see) anything you want to see on the island. Some of most beautiful drives are on this island, including the famous “Road to Hana”.

Always wanted to surf? Why not learn where it was invented? Want to check out a hike? There’s tonnes of people always around so you won’t feel lost or alone.

There’s always a beach to relax at in Maui. With over 30 miles of beaches, if it’s a little crowed or started to rain at one: just walk or drive down to the next beach. If you’re driving, there’s always parking nearby the beaches, making it easier to lock up some of those expensive belongings when you’re ready to go for a swim.

The island quiets down at around 8:00 p.m., but that doesn’t mean it has to be the end of the night for you. Hawaiians are super friendly! Chat with a local and they’ll tell you where you can have a few drinks past sunset (and if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll give you a few secret hikes or places to check out).

Kenya

Kenya was my third African country I travelled to solo. The country on the Indian Ocean has been on my travel bucket list since 2015 but I only managed this year to finally visit.

During my 10 days trip I travelled by public transport as well as with locals that I was put in touch with through friends. I explored the capital Nairobi and went on daytrips to Lake Naivasha and Hells Gate National Park. On a 3 day safari in Masai Mara, Kenya’s most famous National Park, I spotted Africa´s BIG 5. In Mombasa I relaxed at the beautiful beaches and went up the coast to Kilifi to experience real Swahili Culture. It was an incredible trip and there wasn´t a single moment where I felt unsafe travelling myself.

Kenya has to offer a lot more - these are my recommendations of other places of interest:

  • Mount Kilimanjaro

  • Amboseli National Park

  • Diani Beach

  • Mount Kenya National Park

  • Malindi

  • Lamu Island

Why Kenya is my top solo travel destination for 2019:

  • It isn´t a destination packed with tourists

  • Kenya offers a rich cultural heritage

  • The people are still real and super friendly

  • You will find untouched nature and endless white beaches stretching along the coast

  • Kenya is home to some of the best National Parks in the world with a large variety of wildlife

Taipei

Taipei is an excellent destination for any solo female traveller! As the capital city of Taiwan, Taipei is the centre of the political, economic and cultural centre. The city has modern skyscrapers in between neighbourhoods where you will find traditional shophouses.

While you are in Taipei, visit local attractions including Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, National Palace Museum, Taipei 101 and the quaint neighbourhood of Da’an.

And sample world-class cuisine in some of the best night markets in Taiwan, like Raohe Night Market, Shilin Night Market and Ximending Night Market. Try typical Taiwanese breakfast at Yong He Soy Milk King, flakey scallion pancakes at Tian Jin Flaky Scallion Pancake, and delicious soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung.

A trip to Taipei is not complete if you haven't visited the small towns just outside of Taipei. Jiufen is a small hilly town where you can sip tea in traditional teahouses. And Shifen is railroad town where you can release lanterns into the sky.

Most of all, Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the world and travelling solo is not frowned upon. Despite the language barrier, I've met the friendliest people in Taiwan who are always willing to help and greet you with the warmest smile.

Furthermore, Taipei is a very budget friendly city where food and accommodation are both extremely affordable.

As a solo traveller, I love everything about Taipei! It is one of the most undervalued cities in the world and should be experienced by everyone.

Oman

Oman is one of the very few countries considered as safe to travel for solo female travelers in the Middle East. However, not many solo female travelers prefer to visit the Middle East due to the region’s reputation, which has been built, unfortunately. But Oman is undoubtedly a safe haven for not just the solo female travelers but for anyone visiting the country. As the country has now finally started to make a spot on the world tourism map, the tourist has started visiting The crime rate in Oman is nearly zero as the country bears severe punishments for the smallest of the crimes, which makes it very safe to travel for a solo female traveler. Moreover, Omanis are known for their hospitality and kindness towards strangers and they are always eager to help when seeing a foreigner in need of assistance. The women in Oman are highly respected irrespective of what they are wearing or if they’re being accompanied by a man or not. Though Oman is an Islamic country, it has a modern approach towards women, however, it is recommended to wear clothes covering shoulders to knees in public places as a sign of respect towards the local culture.

Peru

There aren't many places where you can find tropical rainforest, arid desert, incredible beaches, culturally rich highlands and bustling cities all within the same geographical borders. Well, Peru can offer you all this and more!

Peru was the first place I ever travelled to solo when I was just 18, and I could not have asked for a better initiation into the world of solo adventuring. From the cusqueños who welcomed me with open arms to the incredibly tightknit backpacking community who were always there to offer seasoned advice, there wasn't a single moment in Peru when I didn't feel safe.

Solo female travel destinations 2019.jpg

In addition to being incredibly safe to travel alone, Peru is the ultimate adventure playground!

Most people visit with Machu Picchu in mind, but there's so much to Peru beyond the World Wonder! Get the adrenaline pumping with one of the world's longest ziplines, go white water rafting down some of the most exciting rivers in South America, or mountain bike through the most incredible landscapes; there's an endless supply of adventure sports in Peru!

For those looking for a bit of excitement but not quite keen on breaking all their bones, Peru has a wealth of ancient archaeological sites to be explored. From the well-known Pisac Ruins, Sacsayhuamán and Ollantaytambo in the south to the lesser-visited Kuelac, Chan Chan and Cumbemayo in the north, Peru will have you feeling like Indiana Jones in no time.

Then there's the cultural side of Peru.

Never have I visited a country with such a strong sense of who they once were. Peru holds its culture and heritage incredibly close to its chest, and you'll see this in the many, many street parades and festivals that you'll come across during your time there.

Whenever anybody asks me to suggest somewhere for them to travel solo for the first time, I don't hesitate for a second in recommending Peru.
